This was almost the fate of Starfish, a helpless puppy found abandoned in a box with her tiny legs bent at unnatural angles. The person who found her assumed there was no hope—that she would have to be put to sleep.

It wasn’t long before Starfish caught the attention of Leigh Anne Gray, a woman who immediately fell in love with the tiny puppy.
“We loved the little dog so much,” Leigh Anne said. “She taught us something we had never seen before.”
Because of her condition, Starfish couldn’t be picked up like a normal puppy. She was too weak, her tiny body flattened against the ground.
“She was so flat that you had to hold her sideways,” Leigh Anne recalled. “But I grabbed her, and I wouldn’t let go.”
From the very beginning, Leigh Anne and her entire family dedicated themselves to helping Starfish regain her strength.
“All we had to do was get her feet under her,” she explained.
With patience, love, and determination, they found creative ways to help her build muscle and learn to stand.
A True Fighter
With each passing day, Starfish grew stronger. The family made sure she had grass beneath her paws for traction, encouraging her to follow them.
“Once we got her on the grass and gave her something to hold on to, she would follow us anywhere.”
But they weren’t alone in their mission. The dedicated staff at the animal rescue center also worked tirelessly to support Starfish’s journey.
Her progress was slow, but she never gave up.
“She doesn’t understand what’s wrong with her,” one caretaker said. “She just keeps trying. Every day, she gets a little better.”
