After being missing for nearly a week, Athena, a four-year-old German Shepherd and Husky mix, miraculously found her way back home in Florida just in time for Christmas Eve—astonishingly, she even rang the doorbell upon her return.
Athena disappeared from her home in Green Cove Springs, near Jacksonville, on December 15. Her owner, Brooke Comer, recalled leaving for church that day, only to later receive a message from a neighbor with a picture of Athena outside the house. Panicked, the family rushed home to find Athena’s collar inside her crate, with no clear indication of how she had escaped.
Over the following days, the community came together in an effort to locate the missing dog. Neighbors and residents of nearby towns shared sightings and security footage that helped track Athena’s journey. Based on the information gathered, it appeared that Athena had traveled nearly 20 miles during her time away from home.
Despite multiple reported sightings, Comer and her family were always a step behind, unable to catch Athena in time. “She was the ultimate hide-and-seek champion,” Comer said, describing the emotional rollercoaster of hope and disappointment with each new lead.
Then, in the early hours of Christmas Eve, something incredible happened. At 2:30 a.m., Comer received a notification from her Ring doorbell camera. At the same time, her other dog started barking. Checking the footage, she was stunned to see Athena at the front door, eagerly jumping and ringing the doorbell.
Comer immediately let Athena in, and the dog excitedly ran inside, greeting her half-asleep son on the couch with joyful licks. After a few moments of play, Athena settled into her crate and drifted off to sleep, as if nothing had happened.
The heartwarming ordeal left Comer and her family deeply touched by the kindness of their community. Their next steps included a full veterinary check-up, flea and tick treatment, and ensuring Athena was microchipped to prevent future disappearances.
Athena’s remarkable journey is a testament to the strong bond between pets and their families, proving that even in moments of uncertainty, love and determination can lead to the happiest of reunions.
